Enjoying a quiet morning at the cottage , craving a slice of cinnamon coffee cake with my rooibos tea. I would bake this cake but I didn’t order an oven for my cottage kitchen. As some of you know , I use the barbecue for baking and it works most of the time. But this year , I vowed to get a real oven. Any recommendations? I have not been so lucky with appliance choices... they seem to need repairing frequently. .

The constant heat this summer requires something a bit more interesting that just plain water to stay hydrated. This pretty drink will make you feel like you sipping a fancy cocktail but with health benefits. Our current flavour combination is local strawberries, organic lemons and fresh lemon thyme. No recipe required. Gin is optional. .

Peonies, the flower of my childhood. Mom would grow them alongside the side of our walkway that lead to our back lane. I would have to ask permission to cut their floppy stalks. Their sweet fragrance immediately filled our tiny kitchen along with the ants that escaped their soft, fluffy petals. The battle would begin; hands slapping and feet pounding on mom’s clean counter and floors. Here’s a simple trick when cutting peonies; dip the heads into cold water, shake well and leave the flowers outside for a few hours. This will help eliminate most of the ants .. Happy Monday

My middle son is turning 21 and I am trying to decide if I’ll bake him a cake or pick up a store bought one before I head to our cottage to host 10 people. Maybe a trifle with fresh strawberries I picked up yesterday from the farmers market. Strawberry season has begun so we need to eat as many as we can. .
